An Autoclave is a pressure chamber (“strong heated container”). It is used to carry out industrial processes (chemical reactions) which require elevated temperature and pressure that is different from ambient air pressure. There are many types of Autoclaves available optimised for specific purposes and for variety of uses. There are many industries using this type of equipment in their everyday use. One industry worth mentioning in terms of Autoclaves is Chemicals, where they are being used for curing coatings, hydro-thermal synthesis and vulcanisation of rubber. The aviation industry and racing car manufacturers use Autoclaves for curing composite materials in a heated nitrogen atmosphere. In electrical industry Autoclaves are often used for growing synthetic crystals. One of the most important is medical industry where Autoclaves are in use for sterilisation. All medical instruments needs to be sterile before use. These are just few examples of how Autoclaves can be used.

 

This type of equipment must be in full working order all the time as it is part of very important processes. Autoclaves comes pre-calibrated by the manufacturer but because of some external and internal factors they lose their accuracy over time. For health and safety reasons it is required to perform Autoclave calibration every 6-12 months. There are specialised laboratories that can calibrate Autoclaves for their customers.
