Conductivity Meter Calibration

The Conductivity Meter Calibration Service offered by AMECaL builds on more than 15 years of experience in metrology and calibration. There are essentially two methods used to calibrate Conductivity Meters, one using electricity and Ohms Law and another more accurate method using electrolyte of known conductivity values. AMECaL will always aim to use the most accurate method available in order to provide a high quality and traceable calibration to its customers.

Conductivity Meters are used across a wide variety of industries and sectors in order to measure chemical concentrations in aqueous solutions. One of the most important applications is in healthcare where Renal Departments in hospitals use what are called Haemodialysis Reference Meters to check conductivity, pressure, flow and pH of a dialysis solution. According to the UK Renal Association there are around 64,000 people in the UK having regular dialysis, this highlights the need for accurate measurement of dialysis solution where risks on calibration periods or level of calibration provided could lead to severe consequences.

There are many different types of Conductivity Meters such as:

  • Pocket and Handheld Meters, which are used mainly by technicians walking around a laboratory or hospital. These are usually the least accurate and used normally for indication only.

  • Thermocouple Probes, which are used in a laboratory environment usually on a benchtop for a particular application or technician. These usually provide highly accurate measurements

  • Isolated Conductivity Instruments, which are focussed solely on providing the most accurate conductivity measurement.

The varying degrees of accuracy and the associated implementation of conductivity meters in industry makes it difficult to offer a one size fits all calibration frequency. Most manufacturers range from 6 months to 12 months in terms of their specification and we would advise adhering to their advice. With all instruments however it is important to take into account usage frequency, type of usage and performance over time when determining calibration frequency.

AMECaL offers a reasonably priced quick turnaround Conductivity Meter Calibration Service, which is not limited in terms of brand, accuracy or type of meter. We have seen amongst others, the following brands of instrument pass through our lab:

  • Aqua Cal

  • Eutech

  • Extech

  • Hanna

  • LTH Electronics
